Castel was one of Israel’s greatest early masters. Castel’s art spanned the whole history of Israeli modern art. His works range from pastoral fantasy to modern calligraphy representing the ancient past. He was part of the School of Paris in the late 1920’s. His later works reflected Israel’s mania for its archeological past. He created a “pre-Hebraic calligraphy” that is both figurative and abstract. A Castel Museum has been erected in Maale Adummim, Jerusalem.
